AI Search Optimization
What Is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization, Explained.
The oldest name for the newest problem: making your content the answer instead of one of the options.
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and AI assistants can extract it and present it directly as the answer to a question.
Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list of results, AEO competes for the answer itself: the featured snippet, the voice assistant's spoken reply, or the response an AI engine generates.
AEO predates ChatGPT by years. The term grew up around Google's featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes, and around voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, which read one answer aloud instead of listing ten links. Marketers called those systems answer engines, because the user asked a question and got an answer, not a results page. The playbook that won there, direct answers, question-based headings, FAQ formatting, clean structured data, turned out to be the head start for the LLM era. The engines changed. The skill of being quotable didn't.
AEO is the formatting arm of AI search work. Its signatures: pages organized around the questions customers actually ask, answers stated plainly in the first sentence rather than buried in paragraph four, FAQ blocks with matching structured data, and definitions written so a machine can lift them whole. If you've noticed the pages on this site answer their own headings immediately, you're watching AEO in practice.
AEO, GEO, and AIO all describe getting chosen by machine-generated answers; the difference is lineage and emphasis. AEO comes from the snippet-and-voice era and emphasizes answer formatting. GEO comes from academic research on generative engines and emphasizes citation-earning content. AIO is the umbrella, often covering Google's AI Overviews. In a real engagement they aren't separate services. They're one discipline we deliver as AI Search Optimization.
The Formatting That Wins Snippets Wins Citations.
The FAQ blocks and direct-answer structure we build for clients feed both surfaces at once: Google's snippets and the AI engines' citations. It's part of the system that took AW Broadband from zero AI citations in August 2024 to the 94 they hold today, tracked monthly in SE Ranking.

Is AEO just SEO for featured snippets?
That's where it started, but the target list grew. The same answer-first structure that wins a snippet is what ChatGPT and Perplexity extract when they cite a page. AEO today spans snippets, People Also Ask, voice replies, and AI-generated answers.
Is AEO obsolete now that LLMs exist?
The opposite. LLMs made every search an answer engine. The formatting discipline AEO taught, question headings, immediate answers, structured data, is now the baseline requirement for AI citations rather than a snippet trick.
Do voice searches still matter for local businesses?
Yes, and they skew local and transactional: "who fixes water heaters near me" spoken into a phone returns one or two names. The AEO structure that wins written answers is the same structure assistants read aloud.
